Memory is related strongly to certain waves in the brain: alpha and theta. Slow Theta waves produced in the brain are related to memory retrieval and are associated with the release of the neurotransmitter GABA. Known as the “peacemaker” chemical, it has a calming effect, reducing stress and anxiety. GABA is the most inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Alpha waves are associated with the release of acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter is involved in recording memories. Acetylcholine is known to be deficient in Alzheimer’s patients. It also controls the stages of sleep, which is critical to memory formation and retrieval as well as all biological processes.
At the heart of all aging, and not just memory loss, is the cell's ability to repair itself. When this occurs within brain cells, the brain loses its ability to function optimally. The brain controls more than just what specifically occurs in the brain. It is the master controller of all bodily function. It is the decider. Organs, tissues and cells depend upon communication to and from the brain to thrive. If the brain is unhealthy and begins to lose function, so follows the rest of the body. The accumulation of poor cellular function can lead to organ stress and dysfunction. These effects summarized are often called aging.
